I've Got Your Back!

Iain Patton

I get some great results, but one thing a coachee recently said really touched me. Leading a fast growing Indian NGO, she said, ‘I feel like Iain is truly on my side, he has my back and believes I can succeed’.

In the dynamic relationship between a coach and coachee, trust is the cornerstone. One of the most powerful ways to build this trust is for the coachee to feel confident that their coach truly "has their back". But what does this mean, and why is it so important?

1. Fostering Psychological Safety

When a coachee knows their coach is fully supportive, they feel safe to explore their vulnerabilities. This psychological safety encourages honest self-reflection, which is essential for personal and professional growth. It creates an environment where the coachee can openly discuss challenges without fear of judgement or retribution.

2. Encouraging Risk-Taking and Growth

Growth often requires stepping outside one’s comfort zone, trying new approaches, and occasionally failing. A coachee who trusts that their coach is in their corner is more likely to take those calculated risks. This confidence can accelerate development and lead to breakthroughs that wouldn’t occur in a relationship lacking mutual trust.

3. Enhancing Communication and Feedback

The assurance that their coach is an ally allows the coachee to communicate freely and receive feedback constructively. A supportive coach ensures that feedback, even when critical, is framed in a way that inspires improvement rather than discouragement.

4. Building Resilience During Setbacks

Challenges and setbacks are inevitable in any growth journey. Knowing their coach has their back helps a coachee navigate these moments with resilience. They are reminded they’re not alone and that their coach is invested in their success, offering encouragement and strategies to overcome obstacles.

5. Creating a True Partnership

A successful coaching relationship is a partnership, not a hierarchy. When the coachee feels supported, they are more likely to engage deeply in the process, seeing their coach as a trusted guide rather than a distant authority figure.

So,

In the end, the confidence that a coach "has their back" isn’t just a comforting feeling—it’s a catalyst for transformative growth. It strengthens the coachee’s ability to face challenges, take bold steps, and become the best version of themselves. For coaches, it’s a reminder that their role is more than guidance—it’s about being a steadfast partner in the coachee’s journey towards success.

It’s true, and I will be to you. I will absolutely have your back.
